We will later take off and visit an area in rainforest where you will be able to experience a tree-top view of the forest by crossing over a canopy walk bridge 40 meters (131 ft.) above the forest floor. Independence Square

After touchdown and settling in at the place of lodging, join us on a drive to the cradle of Ghana’s history to the Independence Square, Independence Arch, and Black Star monuments.   There you will see the exact spot Dr. Kwame Nkrumah stood and declared Ghana an independent country.

Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum

Our next stop is to the resting place of Ghana’s first Prime Minister, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. This exhibition Museum houses the mortal remains of Kwame Nkrumah. There are many personal effects of the prime minister on exhibition including furniture, pictures and books of the man who helped Ghana to gain its independence. The tour guides will walk you through a trajectory of the life of the man who helped Ghana gain win its independence from her colonial masters.

Cape Coast Slave Castle

The next adventure will be a trip to the Central region of Ghana; the seat of Ghana’s colonial history where we will explore the infamous forts, castles and slave dungeons of Ghana that was used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas.  On this tour you will experience the physical history of the slave trade, the impact of which is still felt beyond the shores of Africa today.  The “door of no return” at the castle was the door the slaves went through and was the last stop before being transported across the Atlantic Ocean, to never return.   The slave trade was gradually abolished by each of the colonial powers in the first half of the 1800s, but by this point, the irreversible and immeasurable damage was done.  From West Africa alone it is estimated that six million slaves had been shipped to other countries. About 10-15% perished at sea during the so-called Middle Passage, never reaching their final destination.   President Barack Obama and his family visited the cape coast slave castle in 2009 where he said it was the first step towards the journey that is the African American experience.  He is quoted as saying, “As painful as it is, it helps to teach all of us that we have to do what we can to fight against the kinds of evils that sadly still exist in our world, not just on this continent but in every corner of the globe.”    We will visit the gift shop at the castle, walk the beach, enjoy the beautiful scenery and have lunch at the “Castle Restaurant” adjacent to the castle.

Kakum National Park

Journey to the central region of Ghana to one of Ghana’s rain forests, the Kakum National Park. This natural forest habitat is one of Africa’s finest national parks. Kakum National Park is also in the Central parts of Ghana. It protects an area of rainforest, home to endangered mammals such as forest elephants, bongo antelopes and primates like the Diana monkey. The park is rich in butterflies and birds, including African grey parrots and hornbills. The highlight of the tour is the walk on the famous canopy in the forest reserve.  The Canopy Walkway is suspended 30 meters above the ground and it provides treetop views of the forest.

Hans Cottage Crocodile Feeding

The Hans Cottage, Botel is a restaurant on stilts in a large man-made pond that crocodiles and turtles inhabit together with a range of birds. The pond has about 12 crocodiles living there.  We will have lunch at Hans Cottage.  If you are brave enough you may get an opportunity to touch a live crocodile or maybe just watch the keepers feed them.

Kumasi Craft Villages – Colorful Craftsmanship in Ghana

Our tour guides will treat you to a special visit to the three famous craft villages in the Ashanti Region: Ahwiaa (the wood carvers’ village), Ntonso, the home of the Adinkra symbols and Bonwire, the home of Kente, the pride of the people of Asante and Ghanaians. You will be enlightened to the history of our Adinkra symbols and how and when to use them. You will have the opportunity to see how Ghanaian crafts are made and get the chance to learn from the craftsmen how to make these beautiful crafts. You can buy directly from the artisans who make the products and have an opportunity to speak directly to them. They will teach you how to weave a basket from palm fronds

and how to make them colorful and presentable. You will also get to see and experience all the traditional attire from all 10 regions. You will visit shops that specialize in traditional apparel and you will receive lessons on why the designs are made and what each of them mean.

Kumasi Culinary Adventure

Get ready to be taken on a culinary adventure tour to taste some of Ghana’s favorite foods. We will get expert caterers to teach you the preparation of local delicacies relished across regions. You will get the chance to wine and dine at the local popular eateries commonly called chop bars.Chop is a local slang for the words ‘to eat’ and bar meaning an area that is meant for gathering. It was initially used to serve as a place where bachelors could go to be assured of a good home cooked meal. We will go on a tasting spree as we hop from one chop bar to the other to taste locally-made Ghanaian dishes at some of the most popular chop bars in the country. Chop bars are becoming a Ghanaian cultural icon.

James Town Lighthouse

A nice late afternoon drive will take us through one of Ghana’s oldest suburb district, Jamestown, a popular tourist destination on the coast of downtown Accra. It is a settlement of the Ga indigenous people from the Greater Accra region.  You will learn about the colonial past, their daily lives, culture and traditions.  If you are physically up to it you may want to test your endurance and climb the stairs of the Jamestown lighthouse, which is  35 meters (113 ft) above sea level. Ghana Culture Awareness Adventure

The Ashanti people are the major group in the inland Ashanti region, and are centered on the trading town of Kumasi.  On the coast, the Fante people are in the majority of the coastal towns of Elmina and Cape Coast.  In the Accra area the Ga people dominates and the Ewe are to the East.  This tour teaches

you about the local Ghanaian culture and traditions. You will learn about ethnic practices dos and don’ts. We will learn about the types of family traditions and customs being practiced in the country and the rites of passage of major ethnic groups.

Fantasy Coffin Work Shops

We will visit the Seth Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop studio and other workshops in the area located in Teshie, Ghana.  Seth Kane workshop is known for its fantasy coffins that became symbolic of African artistic creativity. These unique crafts have been featured at exhibitions in the Centre Pompidou, the Grande Halle culture center in Paris, the New Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as exhibitions in Belgium and Spain.    It is believed in Ghana that the coffins are what truly show the essence of the person to be buried. The coffins are supposed to show what the person did during his life, what his habits were and what he loved. Today there are more than a dozen workshops that manufacture fantasy coffins in Ghana.

The Market Places

Sounds and Movements of Ghana – Drum and Dance

Unlock the rhythm of your soul. Follow us on this amazing tour. We will take you on an educational journey to hear the sounds and dance of the various ethnic groups around the country.   You will get the chance to see the National Dance Ensemble in action as they treat you to the indigenous drumming, dance and songs of the ethnic groups. They will showcase the traditional attire to express for each of the dances and provide us the significance of their movements as they dance to the pulsating beat of the drum.  You will learn the names of the dances in addition to the names of the many drums that make up the traditional sounds of Ghana. Labadi Beach

One of Ghana’s most beautiful beaches is the famous Labadi Beach.  People flock to Accra’s most popular beach to play ball games, sand arts, frolic in the surf, go horse-back riding along the beach or party to dance music in the bars and restaurants that line the shore or just relax and bask in the sun.  The beach offers access to a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the shores.
